990 Webinar - What You Did and Did Not want to Know About 990s

This seminar is intended for the person who either does very few 990s or someone who would like a review of our (practitioners) duties and responsibilities in the Not for Profit process.  It will also provide a review of the application process and give a step-by-step procedure for acquiring the needed designation.  It will speak to the reasons for a NFP entity, the elements of a NFP organization, dealing with the IRS, exempt organization types, lifecycle of an exempt organization, annual filing form for both Federal and State, and resources available to the practitioner.  IT will also cover responsibilities for dealing with the Illinois Attorney General's Charitable Trust Bureau and Illinois Department of Revenue.  At the end of this presentation, you should be able to know if you want to assist NFP entities or if this is a service you would like to refer to a fellow practitioner.

Raymond Heinen

Raymond “Ray” Heinen is an Associate in the Firm of Thoma and Associates, Ltd. of Columbia, IL. Ray currently spends most of his time in the areas of individual, small business, and small not-for-profit organization planning and tax preparation. Prior to his current position, Ray enjoyed careers in healthcare and insurance. While in healthcare, Ray served as an administrator of both acute care hospitals and a long term care facility. He was responsible for establishing alternative care models for renal dialysis treatment and addiction services. Additionally, he was responsible for establishing risk management programs and a compliance program in the acute hospital setting. He was a member of the Indiana Hospital Association Board and also served as a Board member and “Peer Review” Chair of the Indiana Healthcare Association. While in the insurance industry, his responsibility was to perform risk management audits of healthcare facilities and consult on alternative methodologies for managing risk. Recommending policy and procedure formulation, to avoid untoward events, was preferential to recommending either risk retention or transfer. He believes that brokering insurance contracts was an excellent learning experience for his work in tax administration. Ray has a Bachelors in Political Science and a Masters in Hospital and Healthcare Administration from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri. His volunteer efforts have involved hospice and social service organizations. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Administrators and has a “Talman Pin” for thirty (40) years of service as an Admissions Liaison Officer for the United States Air Force Academy.
